Measurements need a consistent method
The tape should be level, firm but not tight, and taken over the type of undergarments you expect to wear. Measuring over bulky clothing can distort key circumferences.
Length measurements control proportion
Shoulder-to-waist, waist-to-floor, jacket length and sleeve length help place design lines correctly. Two people with the same bust and waist can still need very different vertical proportions.
Fittings confirm what numbers cannot
Posture, shoulder slope, asymmetry and movement are difficult to capture with numbers alone. Fittings allow the pattern and garment balance to be refined on the wearer.
Practical checklist
Common measurement groups
- Upper body circumferences
- Shoulder and back width
- Torso lengths
- Sleeve and arm measurements
- Hip, rise, thigh and leg length
Questions people also ask
Can I send measurements remotely?
Sometimes, especially for simpler garments, but the studio must decide whether the design can be produced safely without in-person measurement or fitting.
Should I measure tightly?
No. Measurements should reflect the body accurately; the designer adds the appropriate ease for the garment.
Do shoes affect measurements?
Heel height can affect full-length hems and trouser lengths, so shoe choice matters for final fitting.
